Obama made the announcement as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. pledged to double its solar power capacity by 2020. Microsoft Corp. is poised to announce a $1.5 billion investment in solar energy projects in the United States. Walmart recently stopped committing to doubling the number of solar panels in its US stores, but it has promised to double its total solar capacity to 1,000 megawatts (MW) by the 2020s.
The payback period for solar panels is six years, and Google expects to save about $1.5 billion annually in solar costs. Solar is expected to be able to pay back its home buyers and make good financial sense in less than two years, according to Google.

It is emission-free and therefore offers significant savings for the environment and public health.
